3 Hatching Dinosaur Egg Crafts for Kids

    Dinosaur craft video tutorial

3 Hatching Dinosaur Egg Crafts for Kids is a printable dinosaur egg craft bundle with three peek-a-boo paper toys: Max Rex the T-Rex, Rosie Tricera the Triceratops, and Skyler Glide the Pterodactyl. Kids color each dinosaur, cut around the page, fold the egg flap, and open the shell to reveal a baby dinosaur hatching inside.

A Peek-a-Boo Dinosaur Egg Craft Bundle

This project is part coloring page, part simple paper engineering, and part pretend-play invitation. The magic is tiny but very satisfying: one fold line turns a flat page into an egg that can open and close again and again.

Use the full set for dinosaur week, classroom centers, homeschool art, birthday party craft tables, or a rainy afternoon when you need one activity that can stretch from quiet coloring to silly storytelling. The photos below come from our own video process, so the steps match the actual craft shown in the tutorial.

Creator note: I designed this set for children who enjoy a little surprise after the coloring is done. In testing this kind of peek-a-boo printable, the fold-and-reveal moment is usually the part kids repeat most, so I keep the cutting shape simple and let the character expression carry the fun.

    Supplies

    • Peek-a-Boo Dinosaur Egg printable craft bundle
    • Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
    • Child-safe scissors
    • Optional: cardstock or heavy paper for a stronger flap
    • Optional: a folder or envelope to store the finished dinosaur eggs

How to Make the Hatching Dinosaur Eggs

The three pages follow the same friendly process: get the templates, color the dinosaurs, cut out the page, fold the egg flap, and play with the surprise reveal. Once children understand the first egg, the second and third feel wonderfully independent.

Step 1: Print and Set Up the Egg Pages

Print the three egg pages at actual size, then place crayons, scissors, and a finished sample within reach. When I prepare this activity for young kids, I like to show one completed egg first so the fold line makes sense before anyone starts cutting.

The print-ready PDF is available here: Dinosaur Egg Craft Bundle.

Step 2: Color the Dinosaurs First

Begin with the dinosaur characters before coloring the shell. This helps children connect with each character: Max Rex can be bold and sunny, Rosie can be rosy pink, and Skyler can become a bright flying friend. If a child rushes the egg shell, I usually invite them to add only three big spots instead of many tiny details; it keeps the page cheerful without making the activity feel too long.

Color the baby dinosaur first so the reveal becomes the star of the craft.

Step 3: Cut Around the Outside Box

After coloring, cut around the outside rectangle. I prefer coloring before cutting because the full sheet is easier for small hands to hold steady. If you are working with preschoolers, an adult can trim the outside shape after the children finish coloring.

Step 4: Fold the Egg Flap

Fold the top part of the egg down toward the lower line. Press the crease with a fingertip or the side of a crayon. A crisp fold makes the egg open smoothly. If the paper springs back, fold it once in each direction before the child starts playing with it.

Step 5: Make All Three Eggs

Repeat the same steps for the T-Rex, Triceratops, and Pterodactyl pages. The repeated structure is useful for classrooms because children learn the routine once, then practice it three times with different characters.

Step 6: Open, Close, and Tell a Story

Once the eggs are folded, invite children to open the shell and introduce the baby dinosaur. Who hatches first? Which dinosaur is shy? Which one flies away? A simple craft becomes much richer when children use it as a storytelling prop.

Teacher tip: Make one sample egg before the activity starts and show the class the open-close motion. Children usually understand the fold much faster when they see the little reveal in action.

Easy Ways to Use This Craft

For younger children, print the pages on regular paper and pre-cut the outside rectangle. Let them focus on coloring, naming the dinosaur, and opening the egg. For older children, print on cardstock and ask them to add patterns, speech bubbles, or a one-sentence dinosaur fact on the back.

If you are building a dinosaur unit, try using the three eggs as a mini sequence: land predator, horned herbivore, and flying reptile. Children can compare teeth, horns, wings, eggs, and habitats without the lesson feeling heavy.

    Learning Skills Covered

    • Fine motor control
    • Color planning
    • Scissor practice
    • Folding and hand strength
    • Following multi-step directions
    • Dinosaur vocabulary
    • Sequencing and comparison
    • Storytelling and pretend play

Make It Feel Like a Tiny Dinosaur Book

After the crafts are finished, staple or clip the three eggs into a simple booklet. Children can open each page, reveal the dinosaur, and tell a short hatching story. This is a nice bridge between craft time and early literacy because the children are not only making something cute; they are building a beginning, middle, and end.

Peek-a-Boo T-Rex Egg Craft for Kids

    Dinosaur craft video tutorial

This Peek-a-Boo T-Rex Egg Craft is a cheerful printable dinosaur activity for preschool, kindergarten, homeschool, and rainy-day crafting. Kids color the T-Rex, fold the egg flap, and open it again and again to reveal a happy baby dinosaur hatching from the shell.

We built this post in the style parents and teachers usually love: quick overview first, a video near the top, a clear supply list, lots of process photos, practical classroom tips, and a direct printable download link when you are ready to make it.

    Peek-a-Boo T-Rex Egg Craft

This printable works especially well for a dinosaur unit because it feels like both a coloring page and a simple paper toy. The folding egg makes the activity more interactive than a flat worksheet, while the big T-Rex face gives kids a character they can connect with.

Use it after reading a dinosaur book, during a preschool craft center, as a kindergarten fine-motor activity, or as an easy printable to send home with families.

Creator note: I designed this kind of peek-a-boo page so children get a small surprise after the careful coloring work. In practice, the craft works best when kids color first, cut second, and fold last, because the full sheet is easier for little hands to hold steady.

How to Make the T-Rex Egg Craft

The craft is intentionally simple: print, color, cut, fold, and play. I have placed each photo next to the exact step it explains so parents and teachers can scan the tutorial quickly before starting.

Step 1: Get the T-Rex Egg Template

Start by opening the printable product page and downloading the PDF template. Print the file at actual size before coloring, cutting, and folding.

Step 2: Color the Dinosaur First

Invite kids to color the T-Rex before coloring the egg shell. Starting with the character builds excitement because the dinosaur face becomes the surprise they will reveal later.

    Coloring Details Before Cutting

After the T-Rex face is colored, add color to the shell, egg spots, grass, and background details. Keep this section short in class: too many repeated coloring photos can make the tutorial feel slow, so these three images show the main coloring stages only.

Color the grass at the bottom of the dinosaur egg

Step 3: Cut Out the Craft Page

Cut around the outside rectangle after the coloring is finished. For younger preschoolers, an adult can pre-cut the rectangle so the child can focus on coloring, folding, and the peek-a-boo reveal. If the paper starts to curl, turn the page instead of twisting the scissors.

Step 4: Fold Along the Egg Line

Fold the top egg flap down toward the bottom fold line. Press the fold firmly so the egg opens and closes smoothly.

Step 5: Open and Close the Peek-a-Boo Egg

Open the flap to reveal the T-Rex, then close it again to hide the dinosaur inside the egg. This little surprise moment makes the printable feel more like a paper toy than a flat worksheet.

Teacher tip: Make one finished sample before class. Children understand the fold line much faster when they can see the egg open and close in real life.

    Learning Skills Covered

    • Fine motor control
    • Color recognition
    • Following multi-step directions
    • Scissor practice
    • Folding and hand strength
    • Storytelling and pretend play
    • Dinosaur theme vocabulary
    • Classroom craft independence

    Ways to Use It

For a preschool dinosaur week, set the printable out with crayons and one finished example. For kindergarten, ask children to color the egg in a repeating pattern before folding. For homeschool, pair the craft with a quick question: “What do you think this T-Rex will do when it hatches?”

You can also turn the finished craft into a mini puppet show. Children can name their T-Rex, make a hatching sound, describe the egg, or tell a tiny story about where the dinosaur lives.
